Womb Chair

Eero Saarinen

Womb Chair

USA, c. 1970

The Womb chair, designed by Eero Saarinen in 1948, was created in response to Florence Knoll's request for the world's most comfortable chair. Saarinen drew inspiration from the concept of the womb, aiming to provide a sense of comfort and security. The chair's design is simple yet ingenious, featuring a fabric-wrapped, molded fiberglass bucket on tubular steel legs. Despite its oversized silhouette, the chair's skeletal frame prevents it from appearing bulky.
